Let’s be clear.
We’re both extremely grateful for every day spent in the woods.
Before I get into the story behind today’s video, I’d like to look back at the bulls that have lived incredible lives over the years.
At the start of our travels, we never thought that any of these moose would reach the end of their lives.
We were beginners for sure.
In the fall of 2019, when we first realized Mr. T was gone, it was such a shock, but of course….
Grumpy settled in and began his ascent.
Since 2018, we’ve lost so many people.
Mr T, King James, MisMatch and Grumpy all stand out.
But Sarge, Jake, Son of KJ, Marley, Pig Pen, Pistol Pete, Dark, Watson and Chill Bill are also missing.
I’m glad to realize this and look forward to continuing to study these wonderful warriors.
Today’s clip begins with Left Hook, then Imposter (formerly known as Will), at 1:18 seconds Flat Top enters the scene, and we end with Turkey at 3:16 seconds.
All these clips date from last autumn.

We are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire (and part-time Alaska) wildlife photographers.
In New Hampshire, we spend much of our spring and summer hours kayaking and photographing loons and moose in New Hampshire waters.
In autumn, we travel many miles in Alaska in search of all kinds of wildlife.

The Last Days of Moose Rut: A Spectacle of Nature
Every year, as autumn settles over the forests of Europe and Canada, a fascinating event takes place: the moose rut.
This phenomenon, which marks the mating season of these majestic animals, is a spectacle that few are fortunate enough to observe.
In this article, we explore the final days of the rut, a pivotal period for moose.
The Reproduction Cycle
The moose rut generally begins at the end of September and continues until the end of October.
During this time, the males, known as stags, become particularly restless and competitive.
It’s a time when males express their dominance through powerful vocalizations, displays of strength and fights with other males to win the attention of females.
Moose, with their imposing size and large antlers, are both impressive and intimidating.
During the rut, males use their antlers to defend themselves and impress females.
Fights can be spectacular, but they can also be brief as the males realize their inferiority.
The Last Days of Rut
As the end of the rut approaches, the intensity of fighting and courtship increases.
The males, often very tired after all the fighting and courtship, begin to show signs of decline.
The first snowflakes can also signal the imminent end of this frenetic period.
In these final days, interactions between males and females become more marked.
The females, called females, begin to congregate with those selected by the males.
This process of natural selection is crucial to the survival of the species, ensuring that only the strongest and fittest males reproduce.
It’s fascinating to see how moose adjust their behavior according to circumstances.
While some males continue to fight for females, others, having understood their position in the hierarchy, withdraw to avoid further exhaustion.
This shows a remarkable level of animal intelligence and adaptation.
The End of Rut and its Consequences
Once the rut is over, moose preoccupations change.
The males, often weakened after this intense period, engage in strength-building behaviors.
Females, meanwhile, show signs of pregnancy, and the cycle of life continues.
The calves, called fawns, are born the following spring, bringing with them a new generation of moose to continue the cycle.
Rut Observation
For those wishing to observe this natural phenomenon, we recommend visiting protected areas where moose are present.
Guided excursions are often organized at this time of year, offering nature lovers a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty of these animals in their natural habitat.
Conclusion
The last days of the moose rut are a captivating moment that reflects nature’s resilience and adaptability.
It’s at this time that we can see the full majesty of these creatures, while realizing the importance of their conservation.
Respecting their habitat and minimizing our impact on nature is a responsibility we must all take seriously, so that future generations can also enjoy the spectacle of the moose rut.
