Luckily for us, our friend Michael Mauro, Rick and I were able to hoist ourselves to the top of a large boulder to witness this spectacle from the front row.
It’s incredible behavior to witness from the safety of eight feet up.
I wouldn’t have wanted to be on the ground for this show!
Watch the cows go wild over his pit.
Watch the cows go wild over his pit.
Oh, and by the way… I’d cut out twenty (20!) seconds of his pee in this video!
Alaskan moose, it’s fun and it’s crazy!
Enjoy, and if you like it, subscribe!
Thanks for watching our channel, we’re the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part-time Alaskans.) It’s our passion to document wildlife in all its forms, but moose are at the top.
In New Hampshire, we spend much of our spring and summer hours kayaking and photographing loons and moose in New Hampshire waters.
In autumn, we travel many miles in Alaska in search of all kinds of wildlife.

The Behavior of the Elk Pit: A Journey to the Heart of Nature
Introduction
Nature, with its richness and complexity, offers a fascinating field of exploration for researchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Among the spectacular manifestations of this ecosystem, the moose pit stands out for the beauty and majesty of these iconic animals.
Recently, a team of researchers succeeded in capturing these rare moments on film, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the lives of these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
La Fosse aux Élans: Habitat and Features
The moose pit, often located in wooded or swampy areas, is a vital habitat for these large mammals.
Moose, which can weigh up to 700 kg and reach a height of almost 2 metres at the shoulders, are the largest members of the deer family.
Their preferred habitat consists of dense forests and wetlands, providing both abundant food and refuge from predators.
Behavioral observations
The recently completed film on moose behavior in their pit revealed several fascinating behaviors.
Moose are generally solitary animals, but are sometimes observed in small groups, especially during the mating season.
Rivalry between males, illustrated by impressive fights, was captured in detail.
These confrontations, often accompanied by stampedes and parries, bear witness to hierarchy and natural selection.
Another notable aspect of moose behavior is their interaction with their environment.
Moose are grazers and spend much of their day foraging for food, feeding on leaves, bark and aquatic plants.
The film also shows how they use their immense size to destroy branches and reach parts of plants inaccessible to other herbivores.
Impact of Seasonality
The seasons play a crucial role in moose behavior.
In winter, they adapt their diet and movements to survive the harsh conditions.
The film highlights their ability to navigate snowy landscapes in search of food, while avoiding predators such as wolves and bears.
Summer, on the other hand, is a period of intense activity.
Moose engage in grooming and swimming behaviors, often in ponds or rivers, to regulate their body temperature and rid themselves of parasites.
These moments of relaxation and play were also filmed, revealing a more playful side of their behavior.
Conservation of Elks
With the documentation of these fascinating behaviors, the importance of conserving moose and their habitat becomes even more apparent.
Habitat destruction, caused by urbanization and industry, threatens not only the survival of moose, but also that of many other species.
The film serves as a wake-up call, reminding the public of the need to protect these precious spaces to ensure the survival of wildlife.
Conclusion
The Moose Pit Behavior film offers an exceptional insight into the lives of these majestic animals.
By revealing their social interactions, feeding habits and adaptations to the seasons, this project underlines the importance of understanding and protecting these iconic creatures.
Through this work, the filmmakers and researchers hope to inspire a new generation to commit to the protection of nature and its inhabitants, thus ensuring a balance between man and wildlife.
