But before the rut begins, the area where they live is peaceful.
While still in velvet, they continue to feed, and males often mingle with each other until the velvet is lost.
We filmed a total of seven moose ruts in a row, and learned to appreciate this period of calm before everything explodes and it’s every man for himself.

We are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire (and part-time Alaska) wildlife photographers.
In New Hampshire, we spend much of our spring and summer hours kayaking and photographing loons and moose in New Hampshire waters.
In autumn, we travel many miles in Alaska in search of all kinds of wildlife.

The Giant Moose Before Rutting Begins
The moose, that impressive cervid that inhabits the forests of North America and the frigid regions of Europe, is a fascinating and majestic creature.
Before the arrival of the rutting season, which generally takes place in autumn, the moose undergoes a period of intense activity and preparation that deserves to be highlighted.
The Biology of Moose
The moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family.
With its large size, long legs and iconic palm-like antlers, it is well adapted to cold climates.
These herbivorous animals feed mainly on leaves, bark and aquatic plants, and are particularly well adapted to navigating their aquatic habitat.
Pre-rut behavior
Before the rut, which generally takes place between September and October, the breeders, i.e. the males, begin to display particular behaviors.
During this pre-rut period, males seek to establish themselves in a territory where they can attract females.
This often involves displays of power: males show their antlers, rub against trees to mark their territory, and emit vocalizations to signal their presence.
Their competitive instincts kick in, and they engage in ritual combat to establish dominance.
These encounters can be violent, but are often marked by impressive displays rather than actual combat.
Female behavior
On the female side, the period leading up to the rut is also significant.
Females become more active and begin to show signs of oestrus, attracting males looking for a breeding partner.
It is during this period that females are particularly vulnerable, as they also have to look after their young while attracting suitors.
The Rut Cycle
The rut is a period of great activity for moose.
It is marked by loud vocalizations, fights between males for dominance, and much movement among groups.
Males that have successfully established their territories approach females, and competition for mates can lead to energetic fighting.
After the rut, male moose often retreat to less populated areas to recover energy, while females prepare for the gestation season.
This period is crucial, as it will determine the year’s reproductive success.
Conclusion
The giant moose is not only a symbol of northern wildlife, but also a captivating example of the animal life cycle.
Before the onset of the rut, these majestic cervids enter a crucial phase of their existence, marked by competitive behavior, the search for mates and intense preparations for the breeding season.
Understanding these social and biological behaviours helps us to better appreciate the richness of nature and the delicate balance that governs the animal world.
The moose, in every season, reminds us of the importance of conservation and respect for its habitat, to preserve these magnificent creatures for future generations.
