This young bull is one of Libby’s favorites.
When we found him last fall, we thought he was new to us, but you know us, we keep digging to solve those moosteries.
Join us today as we explore Curly’s adventures in the latest rutting season.
Curly is wonderful.
We’ll be looking for him soon.
He’s the perfect example of how resilient moose are and some of the things they can overcome.
We all know Mismatch and the extraordinary things he’s done.
Speaking of Mismatch, even though this will be the second rut without him (he never came last year), we’ll never forget him and we’ll miss him when we arrive this year.
And then there’s Grumpy.
I’ll be wearing him on my sleeve when I arrive this autumn.
I have no intention of trying to control my emotions; I’ll just let them flow and accept them.
By the way, for those of you who own the MooseMan 2023 calendar, the May photo is of Grumpy on the last day we saw him.
We will continue to celebrate this bull.
After more than 40 years of studying moose, he and Left Hook have captivated me the most.
But whatever top 5 I could come up with, it wouldn’t be easy to put distance between one and the other.

Giant Male Elks: Nature’s Titans

The moose, or Alces alces, is one of the largest members of the deer family.
These majestic animals, often referred to as “oros” in some regions, are impressive creatures, especially the giant males, distinguished by their imposing size and unique attributes.
In the vast expanses of the boreal forests, these giants of nature embody strength and resilience.

Imposing size

Giant bull moose can reach up to 2 meters in height at the shoulders, sometimes weighing over 800 kilograms.
Their large size enables them to cover a wide range of terrain, from marshes to wooded hills.
Their long, sturdy legs enable them to move with ease, even in difficult conditions.
Their large hooves are adapted for walking on swampy terrain, enabling them to feed on leaves, bark and aquatic vegetation.

The Antlers: An Impressive Show

One of the most remarkable features of bull moose is their large antlers.
These antlers can extend up to 1.5 meters from tip to tip, and weigh around 30 kilograms.
The antlers, which are actually extensions of the frontal bone, are naturally shed each year and grow back in the spring.

Antlers are more than just ornaments; they play a crucial role in mating rituals.
